The Vertical Hair Cut

The Vertical Hair Cut,

I went to Jovance last Thursday for a serious hair problem. I love my hair and I think it is one of my best assets but it was "poofey" and way too wild. I needed more than a trim but I did not want to lose the length.

I was really concerned about who would cut it because my hair is hard to cut. I have long, thick hair and I did not want short hair but I really needed relief from the heat as normally my hair was ending up in a pony tail or hair clip by noon.

My stylist at Jovance was great. She understood that I needed my hair reshaped and some of the weight taken out. They devised a two part process that could specifically solve my problem and I call it the vertical hair cut.

So here is what they did: First my hair was shaped. I had been afraid to cut it and some of the ends needed to come off. She worked some layers into my hair and it did take her a long time. She was meticulous and my hair was exactly perfect but still too thick.

When she was done I went to the next stylist who was an expert with "cutting into" a persons hair and taking the bulk out with a razor and that was done in a vertical technique removing select sections of hair.

I could not believe how much of my hair was on the floor and I still had long hair. It was great and I had great volume which I never had before. The smaller pieces of hair were just giving me the perfect "Rocker-Chic" hair.

I love my "Vertical Hair" Cut and if you have long, hot, thick hair I definitely suggest you thin it out this summer and cool down. It is so much faster to blow dry and style. I love it.

So check out a Vertical Hair Cut if you want to keep it long but not be to hot... (temperature wise)

Fabulous Bi-Racial Hair Care

Remember playing "Dress-up"? And using a pillow case, hooded sweatshirt or, daiper cloth (as shown to the left) as your glamorous hair, because yours was a big poof or too short to whip over your shoulders with attitude? Oh how I longed to have someone do something beautiful with my hair... Have you been looking for a salon that can handle the strength & length of your bi-racial hair with style & care? I've found the Place!!! Jovance Beauty and Wellness in Vallejo, California... Longing is over for me & my children!!! I can't tell you the countless salons I've tried, looking for a place that could care for the unique blend of European, Native American & African hair the My daughters and myself have. Each of us has different textures of hair, none exactly the same. Our hair isn't "Either Or" it's a blend of Many... Salons tend to focus on Either African Or European hair, either they can cut but not style (typically Anglo/European Salons) or they can style but not cut (typically ethnic); too much or too little Conditioner, oil, grease or heat; I've spent Hundred$$$$$ of dollars over the years trying to find a place that can handle the balance of hair textures... And we've found it at Jovance!!! We're soooo happy someone can do Our hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HairWorld: The Persuit of Excellence

Who Saw HairWorld on PBS? (It will be on Wednesday the 25th PBS fyi)

I read that it was the Best in Show if you like bouffants and if it is not past the 25th you may want to check out the local showing.

Me, I like my hair to look soft, silky and natural. I don't mind hairspray but definately no teasing...

Hairstyles come and go but truly, I have never seen such lovely hair styles as those that walk out of Jovance Beauty and Wellness. I think they need a TV Show: Beautiful Hair... Amazing Hair Styles or Heads that Talk would be my choices for a title...

For a reality show, I would love to see all the heads that walk out their shop and the heads they turn. What happens to these lovely ladies after a hair appointment would be great...

Yes, they look that good. Really!! Press and Curl, Up do's, Highlight, Low lights, Cut and blow dry, what ever your taste you will definately find the amazing looks at Jovance Beauty and Wellness.

Things That Make You Look Beautiful

Beauty Comes from Within... but there are definitely things that I feel make me look beautiful. First off that inner glow... the joy I carry makes me look beautiful and that takes work. I need rest, a healthy diet, exercise, the right clothes, make up and peace. Sure, I do have my little inner diva routine: hair, nails, grooming and the trick list like Shampure Hair Products from Aveda...

So what makes you look and feel beautiful?

Here are some of the things we have heard:

A new outfit or piece of clothing (including a new pair of shoes).
A spa service: massage, pedicure, manicure, facial, body peel, hot stone massage
A beauty enhancement product: eyelash extensions, hair extensions, microdermabrasion
A piece of jewelery
Cosmetics: make up, body and bath products.

My favorite routine is getting a "Pamper Me" day where I get the manicure, pedicure, and then my hair done. A new cut with a blow dry always makes me feel beautiful.

So how about you?

Can Eating Good Can Save Your Skin?

I recently saw the article "Can Good Eating Save Your Skin?", by KAREN COLLINS, M.S., R.D., C.D.N, AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR CANCER RESEARCH.

What I gleaned is that eating well does help but it does not replace the benefits of using sun screen and protective clothing during peak hours. I buy make up that has sun screen in it because this is just not somthing I could fit in my routine. I am always rushing and just did not like the extra step.

The article said that their Researchers found, "premature aging of skin and skin cancer seem to involve sun damage from ultraviolet light, which creates highly reactive substances, called "free radicals," that damage cell proteins and DNA..."

To counter act this we need to eat foods high in "antioxidants like beta-carotene and other carotenoids can stabilize free radicals and end the damaging chain reactions they start."

So to me this is yes, eating good foods rich in color can save your skin and benefit your health over all but you MUST protect the skin period. This means skin care lines with UV Protection or a specific sun block.

So my advice is foods rich in color: spinach, carrots, beets, and lots of fruit, grains and leafy veggies full of antioxidants. No one should forget the benefits of water, supplements and exercise to promote general good health of the skin.

I also wanted to point out a key point they made in the same article. They quoted a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition where carotenoid supplements were found to reduced the skins reddening in response to ultraviolet light (which means they suffered less reddening skin damage from ultraviolet light).

Please note that "these studies involved fair-skinned people with a tendency to develop sunburn. It is not clear if the results would be the same for people with darker skin". We do however know that darker skin offers the benefits of the pigments protection and ages much better than fair-skin.

More Info: The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) offers a Nutrition Hotline (1-800-843-8114) 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday-Friday. This free service allows you to ask questions about diet, nutrition and cancer. A registered dietitian will return your call, usually within 48 hours
